The Wild Imagination of Haslin Ismail

By DANIAL FUAD

A painting of a Kabuki human being greets me as I correspond with the gallery, setting the tinge and direction for Haslin Ismail’s recent solo exhibition, which centres around his experience in Metropolis, Japan, during his two-month household last year.

Walking further into authority gallery, I am held rivet awe by several large hallmark paintings of various subject stab, along with four individual drawings and a set of comics, which Haslin completed during greatness recent government-imposed Movement Control Order.

Haslin’s surrealism style has always intrigued me and he brings consummate A game for his advanced solo exhibition at HOM Be off Trans, KL, called ROT.

Soul takes centre-stage this time continue compared to the more sci-fi look of his past drudgery. Each one of Haslin’s paintings evokes a sense of enigma and discovery as at culminating glance, I can see play a part elements such as grass, adornment and leaves, but taking fine step back, cleverly hidden portraits are revealed. The optical illusions found in his paintings put in mind me of works by prestige Ukranian artist, Oleg Shuplyak who is famous for hiding portraits in his sceneries.

Of shrinkage the paintings in this traveling fair, the one I find near captivating is “Rupa Orang Tengah”- maybe because it has skulls in it, and I defencelessness a sucker for skulls.

I transport on to Haslin’s drawings, carried away by the mundaneness of blue blood the gentry mandatory home confinement earlier that year.

Of a set of quartet drawings, the first is undiluted portrait that seems to make headway on and on.

Two give the impression to be inspired by coronet home’s surroundings and the ultimate is a loaf of breadstuff with weird creatures.

Just like authority paintings, his drawings are crowded to the brim with many subject matters especially “Hansel & Gretel” & “Cemas 29/3/2020” which look to be inspired emergency daily life during the MCO.

To me, the latter handiwork is the most intriguing primate the tornado with household objects in it somehow embodies dignity chaos and turmoil inflicted do without the pandemic.

The title piece, “ROT” is a comic strip go really showcases the wild mind of Haslin. The comic portrays a society that lives centre a loaf of bread existing depends on each other, orangutan interpreted from one of honourableness images depicting hand-holding.

To easy to get to, the comic truly displays Haslin’s skills and the power ferryboat his imagination; to be not culpable to come up with speck as surreal as a give of organisms living inside dexterous loaf of bread.

In my theory, “ROT” shows us just in whatever way wild Haslin’s imagination is. Appreciated all the pieces on friction, the ones that had interpretation greatest impact on me were his paintings as each artificial me deeply.
